The expansion of Fiat and Sokon's entry signal growing investor confidence in Algeria's automotive sector. Automotive component suppliers should explore opportunities to establish a local presence to meet the increasing demand for local integration. Investors should monitor the progress of these projects and the government's policy changes to assess the long-term potential of Algeria's automotive industry.

Stellantis, the Franco-Italian-American automotive group, announced on April 7, 2026, the expansion of its Fiat plant in Tafraoui, Oran, with the goal of increasing annual production capacity from 90,000 to 135,000 vehicles by 2028. The expansion project will also create 1,000 new direct and indirect jobs. Meanwhile, Chinese automaker Sokon is constructing a factory in Zana Beida, Batna, to produce buses and trucks, with production slated to begin in August 2026.

The automotive sector in Algeria has faced challenges, including the halting of new vehicle imports in 2017 and the closure of assembly plants in 2019. However, the Algerian government has since introduced reforms to stimulate the industry, including new specifications for manufacturing and distributing vehicles. In March 2023, Fiat officially returned to Algeria, and in December 2023, inaugurated its local assembly facility. In 2023, the Algerian vehicle market grew by 345.3% to 113,122 units after the government eased import restrictions and reissued vehicle import licenses.

The Sokon plant in Batna represents an investment of 8.9 billion dinars (~$57.9 million) and spans 13.6 hectares. It will have a production capacity of 6,000 buses and trucks per year. The plant will feature three production lines and is expected to create 450 direct jobs and 1,200 indirect jobs. Stellantis aims to exceed a 30% local integration rate at the Fiat plant by the end of 2026, including introducing stamping operations in partnership with Algerian suppliers.

The expansion of Fiat's plant and the construction of Sokon's factory are expected to benefit the Algerian economy by creating jobs, reducing reliance on imports, and potentially leading to exports of locally manufactured vehicles. The Sokon project is also seen as a catalyst for attracting further industrial investment and supporting the development of a broader automotive ecosystem in eastern Algeria. The Fiat plant initially focused on the Fiat 500 before expanding to include the Fiat Doblo and Fiat Grande Panda.

Sokon's factory is expected to be fully operational by August 2026, with authorities pushing to launch the first production line as early as summer 2026. Stellantis is targeting an output of 90,000 Fiat vehicles by 2026. The Algerian government aims to position the country as a regional hub for vehicle manufacturing while advancing the “Made in Algeria” initiative in the transport sector.
