The delivery of 276 buses to Algeria signals growing investment in the nation's public transport sector. International investors should monitor Tirsam's performance and potential partnerships with foreign bus manufacturers. Increased demand for public transport may also spur opportunities for companies specializing in transport technology and infrastructure development.

A shipment of 276 new buses arrived at the Port of Djen Djen in Jijel province on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The Algerian industrial group Tirsam received the buses as part of ongoing efforts to support and enhance public transportation across Algeria's various provinces. The port authority released an official statement confirming the arrival.

The delivery aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directives to strengthen the nation's public transport infrastructure. Algeria has been working to modernize its transport systems, including railways, tramways, and the Algiers Metro, since the end of the 18th century. The Algiers Metro, which opened in 2011, was the first rapid transit system in the Maghreb. In 1995, the Urban and Suburban Transport Company of Algiers (ETUSA) was created to replace the former RSTA. In 2023, the port's traffic increased to 9.8 million tons.

Tirsam, an Algerian company, is known for manufacturing trailers, agricultural tractors, and forklifts. The company also uses local raw materials like steel. Tirsam offers a 3.5-ton truck for DZD 3.9 million (~$28,889) and a 6-ton truck for DZD 4.6 million (~$34,074).

The influx of new buses is expected to improve public transportation options for Algerian citizens. Enhanced public transport could reduce reliance on private vehicles and alleviate traffic congestion, particularly in major cities. The port of Djen Djen, located less than 50 miles from the maritime route connecting the Suez Canal to the Strait of Gibraltar, spans 210 hectares. The port is also near the Jijel International Airport and a railway station.

Looking ahead, stakeholders will monitor the deployment of these buses across different provinces and assess their impact on ridership and service quality. Further investments in public transportation are anticipated as Algeria continues to upgrade its infrastructure. The completion of the highway linking the port to the East-West highway at the El Eulma interchange in Setif is also expected to improve logistics.
