The Algerian government's commitment to developing a local automotive industry presents opportunities for international investors and automotive manufacturers. Companies establishing manufacturing or assembly operations in Algeria can benefit from government incentives and access to a growing domestic market. Investors should monitor the progress of local integration initiatives and the development of the subcontracting ecosystem, as these factors will be crucial for long-term success.

Algeria's automotive industry is experiencing a dynamic period in early 2026, marked by increased vehicle imports and growing local manufacturing initiatives. Minister of Industry Yahia Bachir announced on February 12th that over 96,000 vehicles, including both new and used cars less than three years old, were imported in 2025. This figure was revealed during a parliamentary session addressing market tensions related to vehicle availability. Meanwhile, the Stellantis group is advancing its local production efforts, showcasing a vehicle body manufactured at its Fiat plant in Tafraoui, Oran, during the Mechanica auto show.

Algeria's focus on developing its automotive industry reflects a strategic shift from being a consumer market to a regional production hub. The government views the automotive sector as a priority due to its impact on citizens' purchasing power and its potential to build a sustainable, value-added economy. However, the automotive sector in Algeria has been through difficult times, marked by the halting of new vehicle imports in 2017 and the closure of assembly plants in 2019. These initiatives have enabled several key players to position themselves in the market. These efforts align with broader economic reforms aimed at diversifying the economy away from hydrocarbons and reducing reliance on imports.

The Mechanica auto show in Oran drew over 60,000 visitors and resulted in 272 industrial agreements, memorandums of understanding, and collaborative projects, highlighting the growing interest in Algeria's automotive and subcontracting sectors. The government aims for a 30% integration rate in the early years and up to 60% in the long term. Stellantis El Djazair agents network includes almost 70 agents responsible for selling Fiat and Opel vehicles, as well as after-sales services for all Stellantis Group brands.

Several global manufacturers are launching or accelerating industrial projects in Algeria, including Hyundai, Geely, Jetour, Omoda, and Jaecoo. Hyundai plans to invest $400 million to produce several models in Algeria, with its Omani partner Saud Bahwan. The revival of existing industrial sites, such as Chery and BAIC, and the development of the commercial vehicle segment, exemplified by EminAuto in Aïn Témouchent, further contribute to the sector's expansion. The EDIV (Etablissement de développement de l'industrie de véhicules), under the Ministry of National Defense, received 868 buses at the port of Algiers from its Chinese partner, part of a program to import 10,000 new buses for modernizing the national transportation fleet. Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Said Saayoud, announced the start of distributing imported buses to enhance national transport capabilities.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on increasing the local integration rate, with Fiat Algeria targeting 30% by 2026 for its new Grande Panda model. Industry Minister Yahia Bachir emphasized the importance of an integrated production model and the need to certify parts manufactured in Algeria. The automotive industry is expected to be a pivotal moment for the mechanical engineering industry in Algeria. The EQUIP AUTO ALGERIA event, scheduled from March 30 to April 2, 2026, will provide a platform for industry professionals to exchange ideas and explore market outlooks.
