The Algerian government's continued prioritization of defense spending, even amidst a projected $40 billion budget deficit, signals a long-term commitment to security. International defense contractors should monitor Algeria's procurement plans, while businesses operating in the region should factor in potential security risks and associated costs. The focus on border security may also impact trade flows and supply chains in the region.

Army Chief of Staff, General Saïd Chengriha, began a working and inspection visit to the 6th Military Region in Tamanrasset on April 7, 2026, as part of the follow-up on the implementation of the second phase of the combat readiness program for 2025/2026 across all military regions. Chengriha met with the executives and personnel of the region, following reception ceremonies led by Major General Mohamed Adjroud. During the visit, Chengriha conveyed the encouragement of the President of the Republic in recognition of the results achieved in combating terrorism.

General Chengriha affirmed that the military continues to perform its constitutional duties with rigor and vigilance to purge the country of remnants of terrorist groups and extend security throughout the nation. He emphasized the army's commitment to fighting organized crime. The army's efforts aim to dismantle terrorist cells and destroy hideouts, arms, and equipment. In 2023, Algerian forces captured 16 terrorists, arrested 417 affiliates, and destroyed over 37 terrorist caches, including approximately 95 bombs and 917 other weapons.

Algeria's intensified focus on security comes as the country allocates a record $25 billion to its military in 2026, representing approximately 20.6% of the total national budget of $135 billion. This figure surpasses the Ministry of Finance's allocation, which receives 20.3%. The 2026 defense budget is the largest in the Maghreb, exceeding Morocco's $13.4 billion and Tunisia's $1.4 billion. This allocation is part of a trend that began in 2022, with defense spending averaging between $8 billion and $11 billion between 2020 and 2022, rising to over $18 billion in 2023, $22 billion in 2024, and $24 billion in 2025.

Despite the absence of reported terrorist incidents within Algeria in 2023, regional instability, particularly in Mali and Niger, and a reported terrorist presence on the borders with Tunisia and Libya, continue to pose threats. The United States and Algeria have strengthened their counterterrorism partnership through regular dialogue and exchanges of technical expertise. Algeria has also maintained domestic terrorism designations on groups like the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylie and the Islamist movement Rachad.

Looking ahead, Algeria will likely maintain its focus on border security and counter-terrorism operations, given the ongoing instability in the Sahel region and neighboring countries. Continued investment in military modernization and collaboration with international partners will be crucial for Algeria to address these challenges effectively. Investors should monitor Algeria's security situation and its impact on regional stability, as this could affect economic activity and investment opportunities.
