The commencement of children's clothing exports to Mauritania signals a diversification opportunity for Algerian textile manufacturers. Investors should monitor the impact of preferential trade agreements and infrastructure projects like the Tindouf-Zouerate road (840km) on trade volumes. Companies involved in logistics, transportation, and retail in both countries stand to benefit from increased trade flows.

Algeria commenced exporting its first shipment of locally manufactured children's ready-to-wear clothing to Mauritania on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamel Rezig, inaugurated the export operation in Mostaganem. Rezig visited the stand of the Group of Textile Industrialists of Ghardaïa at the national clothing and textile industries exhibition, which is taking place in Mostaganem from February 26 to March 2.

This export initiative aligns with Algeria's broader strategy to diversify its economy and increase trade with African partners. In 2024, Algeria's exports to Mauritania totaled $81.6 million (~DZD 11 billion), consisting primarily of cement ($44.9 million or ~DZD 6 billion), tropical fruits ($9.4 million or ~DZD 1.26 billion), and animal or vegetable fertilizers ($7.46 million or ~DZD 1 billion). Trade relations between Algeria and Mauritania have been strengthening, supported by strategic investments and initiatives such as the launch of Algeria's first commercial bank in Nouakchott and the establishment of a maritime trade route. In May 2025, the Algerian-Mauritanian Business Council proposed a preferential trade agreement to deepen commercial ties, facilitate barter exchanges, and stimulate growth in border regions.

The Algerian textile industry is undergoing reforms to attract international brands and investment. Texstyle-Expo, an international exhibition for the textile, leather, apparel, and fashion sectors, is scheduled to take place in Algiers from April 20-22, 2026, uniting approximately 400 exhibitors from over 15 countries. The event aims to drive partnerships and transaction growth across key value chains, showcasing innovations in design, machinery, printing technologies, and textile finishing.

The export of children's clothing is expected to benefit Algerian textile manufacturers, particularly those in the Ghardaïa region, by providing access to the Mauritanian market. It also strengthens economic cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania, potentially impacting supply chains and trade flows in the region. Increased trade could lead to greater demand for Algerian textiles and related products in Mauritania, while Mauritania could see increased availability of affordable children's clothing.

Looking ahead, the Algerian and Mauritanian trade ministers are expected to meet to strengthen cooperation and bilateral trade through the creation of banks and the facilitation of access for goods and merchandise. Monitoring the implementation of the proposed preferential trade agreement and the outcomes of the Texstyle-Expo in April 2026 will be crucial for gauging the future trajectory of Algerian-Mauritanian trade relations and the growth of Algeria's textile industry.
