Algeria and Belgium Explore Enhanced Economic Partnership and Investment

Takeaway

Belgian investors should explore opportunities in Algeria's energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors, particularly in projects that align with Algeria's strategic vision for economic diversification. Energy firms should monitor potential partnerships with Sonatrach and other Algerian entities, while mining companies should assess opportunities for resource exploration and extraction. Investors should also consider the incentives offered by the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI) to attract foreign capital and stimulate economic growth.

The Director-General of the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI), Omar Rekkache, met with the Ambassador of Belgium to Algeria, Jacques Krier, on Wednesday, February 26, 2026, at the AAPI headquarters to discuss avenues for strengthening economic cooperation and developing bilateral investments. The meeting emphasized the importance of intensifying communication between economic operators and institutions in both countries to foster mutually beneficial partnerships.

Algeria and Belgium have a history of strong diplomatic and economic ties, with 2022 marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Belgium is Algeria's leading trading partner in the Arab world and African region. Bilateral relations are framed by more than twenty agreements, memoranda and letters of understanding in the fields of justice, economy and investment, consular and mobility, social security, transport, Technical, Technological, Scientific and University, Cultural and Energy Cooperation as well as other areas of common interest at the federal level and federated entities, concluded from the 1970s. In July 2025, Belgium reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening economic and energy cooperation with Algeria, expressing interest from Belgian companies in investing and partnering with Algerian institutions, particularly in energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors.

The discussions focused on encouraging the establishment of bilateral partnerships in priority sectors for both countries. These sectors include energy, mining, and renewable energies, with specific emphasis on hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, and energy and mining transformation industries. Opportunities for collaboration in mineral resource exploration, extraction, and processing, along with geological studies, were also explored. Both sides placed special emphasis on strategic and critical materials essential to advanced industries, notably metals used in steel production, batteries, and green technologies.

Enhanced economic cooperation between Algeria and Belgium could benefit companies in both countries by creating new investment opportunities and facilitating technology transfer. Algerian companies can leverage Belgian expertise in various sectors, while Belgian companies can tap into Algeria's growing economy and strategic location in Africa. Increased investment and trade could also lead to job creation and economic growth in both countries.

Looking ahead, it will be important to monitor specific agreements and projects that emerge from these discussions. Further meetings and exchanges between economic operators and government officials are expected to take place in the coming months. Any concrete announcements regarding joint ventures, investments, or trade agreements should be closely watched as indicators of the deepening economic partnership between Algeria and Belgium.
