The acquisition of new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft signals Air Algérie's commitment to expanding its network and capturing a larger share of the growing African air travel market. Investors should monitor Air Algérie's performance on key international routes and its ability to integrate the new aircraft efficiently. The airline's focus on customer experience improvements could also drive revenue growth and increase its competitiveness against other regional carriers.

Air Algérie announced on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the acquisition of ten new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft as part of its strategy to modernize its fleet and expand its network. The order is in line with Algeria's national strategy to develop air transport. The airline aims to improve passenger experience, increase capacity, and support its growth strategy with this acquisition.

This order builds upon Air Algérie's ongoing fleet renewal program, which includes previous orders for 10 Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, of which three have already been delivered, and eight Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets expected from 2027. In July 2025, Air Algérie signed a deal with ATR for 16 ATR 72-600 turboprops to strengthen domestic routes, which will serve the airline's new subsidiary, Domestic Airlines, launched in August 2025. The first deliveries of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 are expected from July 2026, with the remaining aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2027.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is a narrow-body twinjet aircraft. Air Algérie's existing fleet includes 32 Boeing 737 series planes, with 24 of them being the 737-800 model. The average age of these 737-800s is 16.7 years. The airline also operates five Boeing 737-600s with an average age of 23.9 years, as well as two Boeing 737-700 Combi jets and one converted 737-800 freighter.

Air Algérie aims to transport nearly 10 million passengers in 2026, an increase of one million compared to the 8.8 million passengers transported in 2025. This expansion will focus on international markets with promising potential. The airline is also working to improve customer experience and service quality. The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) supports companies investing in air transport by facilitating the establishment of domestic and international air routes.

Air Algérie's fleet modernization is expected to continue with deliveries of the Airbus A330-900neos and Boeing 737 MAX 9s in the coming years. The airline's expansion plans align with Algeria's broader effort to modernize and expand its aviation and transport sectors, including plans to build a new civilian airport near Boughezoul, approximately 170 km south of Algiers. The new airport is intended to improve access to the region and expand Algeria's capacity to handle growing numbers of travelers.
