Takeaway

Air Algérie's strategic shift reflects a calculated response to geopolitical dynamics and evolving market demands. Investors should monitor the impact of reduced Dubai flights on regional business travel and cargo, while assessing the growth potential of expanded routes to Amman, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, and Kuwait. The airline's fleet modernization and expansion into new African markets present long-term growth opportunities.

Air Algérie announced revisions to its flight program to the Middle East and Asia, effective February 14, 2026, as part of an ongoing effort to optimize its international network. The airline is reducing frequencies to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, while increasing flights to Amman (Jordan), Doha (Qatar), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). A new route to Kuwait is also slated to launch soon.

These adjustments are part of a broader restructuring of Air Algérie's flight program towards the Middle East and Asia, aligning with a strategy to reinforce priority destinations and expand regional connectivity. This comes a week after Algeria initiated the process of denouncing the Algeria-Emirati air agreement. The move reflects a calculated strategy to optimize its network and respond to evolving geopolitical and economic factors. In late 2025, Air Algérie launched services between Algiers and Nantes, as well as Algiers and Strasbourg, which are set to continue into 2026.

Air Algérie's CEO, Hamza Benhamouda, stated that the airline's strategy focuses on leveraging established routes and developing connections between major African capitals, aiming to expand routes with southern countries. As part of its modernization and expansion efforts, Air Algérie acquired Tassili Airlines from Sonatrach Holdings in June 2025, rebranding it as Domestic Airlines, which launched domestic operations in August 2025. Following the acquisition, the flag carrier ordered 16 ATR 72-600 aircraft for Domestic Airlines, scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028.

The reduction in flights to Dubai follows Algeria's move to denounce its air agreement with the UAE, potentially impacting travel and trade between the two countries. Conversely, the increased frequencies to Amman, Doha, and Kuala Lumpur, along with the new Kuwait route, will likely benefit business and leisure travelers, fostering stronger economic and cultural ties with these nations. The launch of new international flights, including a direct route from Algiers to Guangzhou, China, and Algiers to Rotterdam (Netherlands) will cater to growing demand and enhance global connections for business and leisure travelers. The Johannesburg route was resumed as of January 16, 2026, reconnecting Algeria to South Africa.

Investors and industry analysts should monitor Air Algérie's performance on these new and adjusted routes, paying close attention to passenger load factors and cargo volumes. The potential launch of a new route to Ethiopia by April 2026 could further expand Air Algérie's reach in East Africa. Also, the delivery of 16 new ATR 72-600 aircraft between 2026 and 2028 will help accommodate increased passenger demand on both domestic and regional routes.
